Why Mumbai ad costs are high and how to work with it
More fashion, beauty, real estate and fintech brands compete for the same Mumbai audience than in any other Indian city. CPMs for women 25–40 in Andheri-Bandra can run 2x what the same audience costs in Pune. That is not a problem to solve with a bigger budget; it is a signal to tighten audiences, improve creative and raise the bar on what counts as a qualified lead.
The brands I see scale in Mumbai are the ones where the brief is 'we need revenue at X ROAS' rather than 'we want more reach'. Revenue and ROAS are the only numbers that justify a Mumbai CPM.
D2C brands: what works on Meta in Mumbai
- Build lookalikes from buyers (people who completed purchase), not from all website visitors — visitor lookalikes in Mumbai are too broad and include a lot of people who never buy
- Run separate creatives for Mumbai vs rest-of-India — city pride, lifestyle imagery and aspirational pricing work differently in Mumbai
- Retargeting on Meta works harder in Mumbai because the audience is more likely to research and return — put 20–30% of budget on retargeting
- Set a ROAS floor: if a campaign runs below break-even for 48 hours, pause it before it compounds
Real estate: generating qualified site visits in Mumbai
Mumbai real estate is split by micro-market. A campaign for a Thane project draws very different buyers than one for Lower Parel or Bandra — different price range, different pain points, different income profile. Campaigns that try to cover 'Mumbai' with one ad set spend most of their budget on people who will never buy in that project's price band.
The accounts where I cut CPL from ₹600 to ₹150–₹200 used separate ad sets by micro-market, qualifying questions in the lead form ('budget range', 'ready to visit?'), and called every lead within 10 minutes.
Amazon sellers in Mumbai
Mumbai has a large base of FMCG, fashion and beauty brands selling on Amazon. ACoS is the metric that matters most before scaling spend. If ACoS is above 25%, scaling spend means scaling losses. The fix is usually keyword negation, match type tightening and a bid-per-ASIN strategy rather than a portfolio-wide blanket bid.
