The real difference is who runs your account
An agency pitch is usually made by a senior strategist. The account is then often handed to an executive who looks after many clients at once. That is not always bad, but it is the main thing to check.
With an independent performance marketer, the person you speak to is the person making changes in Ads Manager. Strategy, campaign building and reporting sit with one person, so there is nobody to pass the blame to and nothing gets lost between teams.
When an independent specialist is the better choice
- You spend roughly ₹1L–₹20L a month on Meta, Google or Amazon and want that money managed closely
- You care about revenue, ROAS or cost per qualified lead, not reach or followers
- You want direct answers from the person doing the work, without account managers in between
- You already have someone for design, content or your website, or only need ad creative guidance
When an agency is the better choice
- You need many services at once: SEO, social media posting, video shoots, influencer campaigns and paid ads
- You run several brands or very large budgets that need a bigger team working in shifts
- You need in-house creative production at volume, such as dozens of new videos every month
- Your company's procurement process requires a registered firm with formal contracts and SLAs
Five questions that decide it
Ask these to any freelancer or agency before you sign. Good answers come with numbers and names.
- Who will log into my ad account every day, and how many other accounts do they handle?
- Show me results from a live account: spend, revenue or CPL, and the date range
- Will the ad accounts, pixel and audiences stay in my business's name?
- How will tracking be set up, and what will you fix first?
- What will the monthly report show, and how often will we review it together?
How fees are usually structured
Both freelancers and agencies in India usually charge a fixed monthly retainer, a percentage of ad spend, or a mix of the two. A percentage of spend rewards spending more, not spending well, so if you choose it, agree on a ROAS or CPL target as well.
Be careful with pure pay-per-result deals for lead generation. They tend to push volume over quality, and you end up paying for leads your sales team cannot close.
Where I fit
I'm Nivedita Uchagavi, a senior account and digital growth manager based in Belagavi. I run ₹18L+ a month across Meta, Google and Amazon for 10+ accounts, with a team that QA's campaigns before they go live. You get one senior person accountable for strategy and numbers, with a team behind the work.
